The project is to frame the relationship between wildlife and human habitat on the Western Ghats. Touching on the defined tiger’s territory which has been shrunk into patches of reserve and fragile corridors, I try to find the opportunities to coexist wildlife and human. Tigers require the largest habitat area for their surviving. If tiger could survive, other’s life will be protected as well. To keep the minimum area for tigers, strengthening the corridor is necessary. The corridors are under pressure to be disconnected due to human-made boundaries: clearing, village, road, and forest fences, etc. The process of the project is to reimagine the boundaries, seek to common ground, and share spaces between wildlife and human.
Jute Splice Experiment with different patterns and strengthening the connections. The pattern has been constructed by removing, cutting the threads from seamless jute fabric. As a result, each patch of fabric has an own particular condition and will have strengths to hang alone without any supporter. It comprises in connection with fragile attachments, but the multiplication keeps the intensity. Learning from the conceptual splice process, site information is arranged. It is turning to be immaterialized. Weaving the texture of the site, I could conceive the boundaries between the forest, village and the road with the specific topographic situation. The small intervention between the boundaries will promote to bring small-scale ecologies first and furthermore it will solidify the Tiger corridors.
The operation of the Bund The studio traveled to one of the small villages on the Western Ghats: Agumbe. I try to adapt the conceptual idea of the bund on the real situation.Creating the bund will collect water, moistures according to time, temperatures, and altitude. Rain will be collected in the bund will be utilized by people for the small agriculture during the days but also thirsty animals at night.Cloud bunds between the forest and the village will collect the moisture when the temperature starts to be changed. The vapor will prevent the vision of people and the wildlife animals. Between the overlapped hours the existence between species will be blurred physically as well. The pathways with cloud bunds will create close distance conditions to the forest but separate people and nature. Under the road, there will be a soil bund that wildlife animals can keep their movement without human’s disturbance. The system of movement and collection of water will be described in consecutive section drawings. The intervened bund would have textures according to the type of the boundaries in Agumbe. When the moisture harvested densely, the intensity of drawing gets stronger in the section. Following water movement in the landscape is the queue for the vegetations and moisture arouse its own atmosphere. The thickened patterns of bunds will foster the diverse ecology and modest human life in the Western Ghats
