Archistart has had the good fortune to meet many young talents who have then stood out in the working world.
After 5 years from the launch, the web platform has now more than 13,000 active users and 25,000 followers on social networks. Almost 4,000 young architects took part in the workshops and events.
For the fifth anniversary, Archistart has tracked down some of them to talk about their professional lives.

Archistart ha avuto la fortuna di intercettare negli anni numerosi giovani talenti che si sono poi contraddistinti nel mondo lavorativo.
Dopo 5 anni di attività il portale web conta più di 13000 users attivi e 25000 followers sui social. Quasi 4000 giovani architetti hanno preso parte a workshop ed eventi.
In occasione del quinquennale dalla prima attività Archistart ha rintracciato alcuni di loro che hanno raccontato qualche aneddoto sulla loro vita professionale.
An example is Igor that we met at IAHrome14. His team had proposed an innovative transportable display module (KIO) suitable for all types of functionality (info point, food, showroom).
Igor Grippaldi, after graduating in his hometown, Catania, found his job stability in Milan at Piuarch.

Igor Grippaldi, dopo aver concluso gli studi nella sua città d’origine a Catania, ha trovato la sua stabilità lavorativa a Milano presso Piuarch.
E’ stato interessante scoprire quale sia stato il percorso che lo ha portato ad affermarsi come professionista nel mercato del lavoro:
Hey Igor, tell us something about your postgraduate period. What were the experiences that helped you grow?
Hi guys, first of all, thanks for inviting me.
Even during my university studies, it was clear to me that international experiences were fundamental for the training of a professional but above of a person.
Society is made up of uniformity, laws, boundaries and stereotypes, but beauty lies precisely in diversity, encounter and sharing. So I tried in my own little way to explore diversity; a few months after graduation I was lucky enough to win an LLP grant (internship abroad) and the first work experience in Wien was handed on a silver platter. From there I went to Panama, then I came back for a postgraduate program in Venice and then abroad again, Buenos Aires, Madrid and finally Milan. Each experience was different and helped to go “depth” in my career and to improve my competences.

Ciao ragazzi, grazie per l’invito prima di tutto. Già durante i miei studi universitari avevo ben chiaro che esperienze internazionali fossero fondamentali per la formazione di un professionista ma soprattutto di una persona.
La società è fatta di uniformità, leggi, confini e stereotipi ma la bellezza sta proprio nella diversità, nell’incontro e nella condivisione. Così ho provato nel mio piccolo ad esplorare la diversità; pochi mesi dopo la laurea ho avuto la fortuna di vincere una borsa Leonardo (tirocinio all’estero) e così mi è stata servita su un piatto d’argento la prima esperienza lavorativa a Vienna, da lì sono andato a Panama, poi sono tornato per un Master a Venezia e poi di nuovo via, Buenos Aires, Madrid e infine Milano. Ogni esperienza è stata diversa e ha contribuito a dare “profondità” alla mia carriera e a perfezionare le mie conoscenze.
Today you work in one of the most interesting and proactive Italian architecture firms. How long have you been there and what role do you play in Piuarch?
Yes, that’s true, I have been working for Piuarch for 1 year and a few months, that over the years has been building a name for its aesthetic quality and it is always interesting to deal with international projects. There I am a 3D artist – this role allows me to work on most of the practice designs, especially in competitions where my figure becomes hybrid and it’s associated with the designer one, considering Piuarch “artisan” approach to design where models, physical and virtual, acquire great importance throughout the process.

Sì è vero, ormai da 1 anno e qualche mese lavoro da Piuarch che negli anni si è fatto riconoscere per la sua qualità estetica ed è sempre interessante potersi confrontare con progetti di caratura internazionale. Il mio ruolo è quello di 3D artist che mi permette di poter lavorare sulla maggior parte dei progetti dello studio in particolare ai concorsi dove la mia figura diventa ibrida e si associa a quella del progettista avendo lo studio un approccio quasi “artigianale” alla progettazione dove i modelli, fisici e virtuali, acquisiscono grande importanza lungo tutto il processo.
What would you recommend to those who are preparing to leave the University in order to be competitive in the labour environment? Do you believe that systems that help to network, like Archistart community, are an important potential added value even in the working world?
Unfortunately, I believe that there is not a single solution to job competitiveness, I certainly believe that specializing is the key to being a little more indispensable than others and therefore carving out one’s own space – this is my little suggestion, especially if you can do it in something that you really like, in my case architectural visualization.
The community I think is fundamental, building a positive network of people that revolve around the same sector always offers an extra inspiration, or a bed where to lean in case of needs, a little joke.

Purtroppo ritengo che non ci sia una soluzione unica alla competitività lavorativa, sicuramente credo che specializzarsi sia la chiave per risultare poco più indispensabili di altri e quindi ritagliarsi il proprio spazio e questo è il mio piccolo suggerimento, specialmente se si riesce a farlo in qualcosa che ci piace, come per me la visualizzazione architettonica.
La community ritengo sia fondamentale, costruire un network positivo di persone che ruotano intorno allo stesso settore offre sempre uno spunto in più, o un letto dove appoggiarsi in caso di esigenze, piccola battuta.
Many young professionals are preparing for the final wave of BIM. There are still sectors of our profession that has not been “affected” by this design methodology yet. What do you think about it? How important is it to stay up to date in our profession?
In my opinion, the new BIM approach to design offers better control in the management of complex projects and it’s a useful tool for the job that is getting more and more “interactive“ and less static.
Our profession is based on a constant updating – I think of it as an “experimental” process and assuming to have acquired all the possible knowledge is a limit to“creativity”. That’s totally in contrast with our world: catching up should be a pleasure for us.

Il nuovo approccio BIM alla progettazione ritengo offra un miglior controllo nella gestione di progetti complessi e sia uno strumento per tanto utile al lavoro che diventa sempre più “interattivo” e meno statico.
La nostra professione si basa su un aggiornamento costante in quanto ritengo sia un processo “sperimentale”, pensare di aver acquisito tutte le conoscenze possibili è un limite alla “creatività”. Ciò contrasta totalmente con il nostro mondo: aggiornarsi, per noi, dovrebbe essere un piacere.
