Roberto and Giulia are looking to work from home every other day and want a more comfortable home setting to better organize the working sphere.
The idea of the new design is therefore based on creating a coherent apartment layout that allows maximum flexibility for many ways to organize the living and workspace. Since they are only working from home a few days a week, the transition between leisure and the working sphere needs to be smooth, quick, and easy.
First of all, the apartment partition needs to be reconfigured in order to tighten the servant space, reduce wasted circulation area, and ensure direct connectivity between the served spaces. Upon entering the unit, the residents access the public areas, such as the kitchen, dining, and living space. The bedroom is thus displaced to a more private corner and can be isolated to become an enclosed and quiet room. The dining and living room can be merged into a large space for leisure or segregated into two distinct work stations. The use of transformable folding furniture allows the residents to re-purpose the rooms. For instance, the bedroom can turn into a study during workdays, and at the same time, leave a great amount of space for Giulia and Roberto to use as an exercise room and break away from their long hours of work. Moreover, because they are confined to a small workspace, it will be important to offer them many different kinds of work stations to help change body posture and maintain productivity. The balcony can also be used as a distraction after long hours of sitting at a desk. It is a great place to get some fresh air and to be connected with nature and the exterior world. It can also be used as the transition space between work and home. Changing into working cloth and ‘going outside’ can help create a mental separation for Giulia and Roberto and make them feel like they are entering a ‘new space’ every time they step on and out of the balcony.
