In Salento, the lightings in occasion of festivals become art. Here, the tradition of ‘Luminaria’ (traditional lighting) is ancient and craftsmanship is still strongly active and leader in the field. Effimero is a research and experimentation laboratory that aimed to discover the themes and techniques of tradition in order to then propose two prototypes to be integrated into more complex installations, included in the regeneration of the San Cataldo seafront. The workshop was coordinated by Orizzontale  and took place during the IAHsummer2018 festival thanks to the support and experience of Torquato Parisi, from Fratelli Parisi company.

Le luci che si illuminano a festa in Salento diventano arte. Qui la tradizione delle luminarie è antica e l’artigianato è ancora fortemente attivo e leader nel campo. Effimero è un laboratorio di ricerca e sperimentazione che ha come obiettivo quello di conoscere i temi e le tecniche della tradizione e proporre due prototipi che possano essere integrati in istallazioni più complesse nell’ambito della rigenerazione del lungomare di San Cataldo.
Il laboratorio è stato coordinato da Orizzontale e realizzato durante il festival #IAHsummer2018 grazie al sostegno e all’esperienza di Torquato Parisi, dell’azienda Fratelli Parisi.

“Sparkling sea” rethinks the traditional concept of ‘Luminaria’. In the past the luminaria lightings reproduced the elements of the city, the façades of the churches, the naves, the soundboxes; the intention of the new project is to reinterpret the key elements of the San Cataldo landscape, such as the pinewood, the sea or the lighthouse, through the luminaria lighting. The seafront has been regenerated by a series of installations that choose the pier and breakwaters as a stage and integrate themselves into the coastal landscape. The coast is propped up with new lighthouses, whose light and whose drawings are amplified and infinitely reflected by the water; a waterfront re-thought to a level even close to the coast, which is visible from the beach and the sea. The prototype created during the IAHsummer18 workshop chooses the sea and its waves as its theme.

“Sparkling sea” ripensa in maniera contemporanea alla tradizonale luminaria. In passato le luminarie riproducevano gli elementi della città, le facciata delle chiese, le navate, le casse armoniche; l’intenzione del progetto è reinterpretare attraverso le “luminarie” gli elementi chiave del panorama di San Cataldo come la pineta, il mare o il faro. Il lungomare è riattivato da una serie di istallazioni che scelgono come palcoscenico i moli e i frangiflutti e si integrano al panorama costiero. La costa si puntella di nuovi fari, la cui luce e i cui disegni vengono almplificati e infinitamente riflessi dall’acqua; un lungomare ripensato ad un livello ancora più vicino alla costa, che è visibile dalla spiaggia e dal mare. Il prototipo realizzato durante il workshop IAH sceglie come tema quello del mare e delle onde.

Also the second project of Effimero lab “splinted lumen” starts from tradition, but in a different way; it tries with a theme that already exists in the experiences of the past, the rose window, but composes it in an unconventional way. The Basilica of Santa Croce’ rose window was the starting point. The concept imagines a rose window that falls and breaks into different pieces; each fragment creates a layer and re-reads the initial design only by overlapping light levels. It is also possible to compose the fragments in a different way to create as many scenarios; if positioned at different distances from each other, on the ground or suspended, they create tridimensional light effects; if assembled they form sculptural luminous bodies, different from the traditional two-dimensional luminary. The realized prototype is made of three assembled levels and creates a tridimensional lighting; it has been used to enlighten a stage during a music performance, becoming center of attention and not only background.

Anche il progetto del secondo laboratorio “splinted lumen” riparte dalla tradizione, ma in maniera diversa; si cimenta con un tema che esiste già nelle esperienze del passato, quello del rosone, ma lo compone in modo non convenzionale. A essere riprodotto è proprio il rosone della Basilica di Santa Croce a Lecce. Il concept immagina un rosone che cade e si rompe in pezzi diversi; ogni frammento crea un layer e si rilegge il disegno iniziale solo dalla sovrapposizione di questi livelli di luci. E’ possibile comporre i frammenti in maniera diversa per creare altrettanti scenari; se posizionati a diversa distenza l’uno dall’altro, a terra o sospesi, creano un percorso di luci che diventa attraversabile; se assemblati formano dei corpi luminosi scultorei, diversi dalla tradizionale luminaria bidimensionale. ll prototipo realizzato è composto da tre livelli assemblati e crea un punto luce tridimensionale; è stato utilizzato per lluminare un palco durante una esibizione musicale, diventando protagonista del palco e non solo fondale.
