Starting from a marketing initiative, Strongbow partners with Swale for the New York’s first floating “food forest” with the aim of reducing the gap between nature and New Yorkers by reimagining the way that city dwellers experience green spaces. Designed by artist Mary Mattingly, the project has been constructed on a 12×40 m flat deck barge that features a main and a second emergency gangway entrance, railings, walkways, and an edible forest garden that uses rainwater and purified, desalinated river water.

Partendo da un’iniziativa di marketing, Strongbow collabora con Swale per la prima “foresta alimentare” galleggiante di New York con lo scopo di ridurre il divario tra la natura ed i Newyorkesi reimmaginando il modo in cui gli abitanti della città possano vivere gli spazi verdi. Ideato dall’artista Mary Mattingly, il progetto è stato realizzato su una barca 12 x 40 m dotata di passerella principale e di una secondaria per le emergenza, ringhiere, aree pedonali ed una parte trattata a giardino coltivabile che utilizza acqua piovana e acqua fluviale purificata e desalinizzata.
Swale is open to public for free during the day and visitors are encouraged to pick fresh produces (raspberries, artichokes etc) and other perennially grown food sources. In order to improve the rainwater collection system and aid plant growth, the floating farm cleans and utilizes 55 gallons of river water each day, reinforcing the idea that water and fresh food are basic human rights.

Swale è aperta al pubblico gratuitamente durante il giorno ed i visitatori sono invitati a scegliere prodotti freschi (lamponi, carciofi ecc.) ed altri prodotti di coltivazione perenne. Al fine di migliorare il sistema di raccolta delle acque piovane e la crescita delle piante, questa fattoria galleggiante pulisce ed utilizza 55 galloni d’acqua fluviale ogni giorno, rafforzando l’idea che l’acqua ed il cibo fresco siano diritti umani fondamentali.
The project is supported by A Blade Of Grass, an organization that promotes socially engaged art: this floating space is also designed for community activities and artistic events, as well as a wide range of eco-initiatives.
