For some years now Archistart has been taking care of the valorization of under 35 young architects and has kept monitoring the panorama of emerging studies on the national and international scene.
Km429, founded by Simona Avigni e Alessio Bernardelli has been gaining ground for a while, showing off in competitions and getting important achievements.
After winning an important competition, these young architects have been awarded the design of the Nuova Arena Garibaldi in Pisa.
Km429 was chosen by Archistart as partner architecture firm of IAHsummer17, and they selected the archistarter Sofia Spallina, one of the participants of the last summer workshop and member of the winning A-tent project group, for an internship; furthermore, they were among the jury members of ATA2018 (Architectural Thesis Award).

Archistart da anni si occupa della valorizzazione di giovani architetti under 35 e monitora il panorama di studi emergenti nel territorio nazionale e internazionale. Km429, Simona Avigni e Alessio Bernardelli si sta affermando da qualche anno mettendosi in mostra tra concorsi e realizzazioni. A seguito della vittoria di un concorso, lo scorso ottobre questi giovani progettisti si sono aggiudicati la realizzazione della Nuova Arena Garibaldi a Pisa.
Km429 è stato scelto da Archistart come studio partner di IAHsummer17 e ha selezionato l’archistarter Sofia Spallina, partecipante al nostro workshop estitvo e componente del gruppo vincitore con il progetto A-tent, per un tirocinio formativo; inoltre hanno fatto parte della giuria di ATA2018 (Architectural Thesis Award). How was the start of Km429 architecture? What would you recommend to a young architect just out of the university?
The start actually started from the university years, first as a dream and then chased during the years of apprenticeship in several firms and the participation in competitions.
To a young architect, we’d advise to undertake a training program in line with his/her own sensibility, looking for architecture firms that has good mentoring as one of the professional funding values; whether they are big names or even local firms that practice architecture.

Lo start in realtà è partito dagli anni universitari, dapprima come sogno e poi rincorso durante gli anni di apprendistato nei vari studi e nella partecipazione a concorsi.
A un giovane architetto consigliamo di intraprendere un percorso formativo affine alla propria sensibilità, ricercando gli studi di architettura che fanno della buona pratica la propria cifra professionale; siano essi grandi firme o anche studi locali dove si fa architettura.
Before getting into the working career, someone may think that an architectural firm is an organized environment, an ordinary workplace. But we know that at least at the beginning things do not always go that way. A nice anecdote from your studio that reminds you how you started?
The real beginning is recent (2013) and it was an attempt to get involved and try to prove its value. We actually do not have anecdotes, but it was a great challenge.

Il vero e proprio inizio è recente (2013) ed è stato un tentativo per mettersi in gioco e cercare di dimostrare il proprio valore. Di aneddoti in realtà non ne abbiamo, ma è stata una bella sfida.
What projects do you have in the pipeline for this year?
We have several single-family homes in the pipeline, some for the interior part only, others for a complete intervention. Some public orders including the redevelopment of a municipal multipurpose building in the province of Reggio Emilia, the construction of the new Piazza Garibaldi in Concordia sulla Secchia -MO (after winning a competition) and the redevelopment of the historic centre of a town in the province of Reggio Emilia. And furthermore, we always keep an eye on the ongoing competitions!

Abbiamo in cantiere diverse abitazioni unifamiliari, alcune solo per la parte di interior, altre per un intervento completo. Alcune commesse pubbliche tra cui la riqualificazione di un edificio comunale Polivalente in provincia di Reggio Emilia, la realizzazione della nuova Piazza Garibaldi a Concordia sulla Secchia –MO (in seguito alla vittoria di un concorso) e la riqualificazione del centro storico di un paese in provincia di Reggio Emilia. E poi teniamo sempre un occhio attento ai concorsi!
Your works are divided into a wide range of interventions: interior, architecture, public space etc If you were asked to choose a project that perfectly matches your identity, which one would you choose?
The project that perfectly fits our environment is what we haven’t designed or developed yet! Surely the housing theme is the one we have more affinity with and the one we have been experiencing solutions and materials for. If we had to choose one, perhaps it would be the interior design project Giò & Marci

Sicuramente il tema abitativo è quello con il quale abbiamo più affinità e quello con il quale sperimentiamo soluzioni e materiali. Thanks to the new platform, Archistart offers the opportunity for young designers to enhance and upload projects by showing off in an international community of architects. Within the Job section (online in beta version) the architecture firms may contact young talents; do you think it can be a good seam between the university and the working world?
It’s a good initiative indeed, because the missed connection between the two worlds is evident. We deal with this situation every day upon the proposals for collaboration that we receive or within the university internships carried out in our firm. There is no awareness of what the labour market, its logic and its dynamics might be.

E’ sicuramente una buona iniziativa perchè è evidente lo scollamento tra i due ambienti. Questa situazione la riscontriamo quotidianamente nelle proposte di collaborazione che ci pervengono o negli stage universitari che vengono svolti nel nostro studio. Non c’è la consapevolezza di cosa possa essere il mondo lavorativo, le sue logiche e le sue dinamiche.
