Archistart, which helps young architecture firms to emerge on the national scene, has been following the design studio OPPS for a while and last July it included OPPS in the jury of the first ATA (Architectural Thesis Award). During the course of this year, OPPS has become one of the most promising under 35 architectural studios, collecting luxury positions and winning many competitions.
Francesco Polci, Antonio Salvi and Filippo Pecorai are active in their headquarters in Florence since 2016 and today they represent a reference point for all those young designers who are about to start an autonomous work path.
Archistart is thankful the 3 young designers for having granted 6 simple but curious questions.

Archistart, che si occupa di mettere in luce i giovani studi emergenti nel panorama nazionale, segue da tempo lo studio di progettazione OPPS e lo ha inserito lo scorso Luglio nella giuria del primo premio tesi ATA (Architectural Thesis Award). OPPS nel corso di quest’anno si è inserito tra i più promettenti studi di architettura under 35 collezionando posizionamenti di lusso e vittorie a numerosi concorsi a cui ha partecipato.

We are a young studio that tries to enhance the practice of architecture as a project.
We are focused mainly on public competitions. This is not due to a particular dedication to the community or a disdain for minor works, but because they represent an open opportunity to get involved. Over time we have also received private commissions, that have challenged us to combine research and contingency.

Siamo un giovane studio che cerca di valorizzare la pratica dell’architettura come progetto.
Ci dedichiamo principalmente a concorsi pubblici. Questo non per particolare dedizione verso la collettività o sdegno per lavori di scala minore, ma perché rappresentano un’opportunità aperta per mettersi in gioco. Con il tempo abbiamo ricevuto anche commissioni private, che ci mettono alla prova per coniugare ricerca e contingenza.

Yes, I would say that the most important gratification was the result of the three competitions we won: the recovery of the former cinema of Pieve A Nievole with the DIALOGO project, the kindergarten for Savogna d’Isonzo with the project MANTELLO, the competition for the restyling of Chiari herbs square with CARILLON. For 2018 firstly we hope that these competitions will take place, in the physical and actual sense of the term, and then we should be able to close at least two other building sites, with the theme ABITARE.

Sì direi che le più importanti sono state conseguenza dei tre concorsi vinti: il recupero dell’ex cinema di Pieve A Nievole con il progetto DIALOGO, la scuola d’infanzia per Savogna d’Isonzo con il progetto MANTELLO, il concorso per il restyling di piazza delle erbe di Chiari con CARILLON. Per il 2018 speriamo innanzitutto che questi concorsi abbiano luogo, nel senso fisico del termine, e poi dovremmo riuscire a chiudere almeno altri due cantieri di interni, con tema l’ABITARE.

The profession, as we mean it, represents a process of continuous tuning between research and contingency. This is very far from the crystallization of an idea, rather it concerns the continuous cross-reference between problems and solutions, jumps of scale and overall visions.
All of this is undoubtedly a critical issue in a global dimension, where the mastery of an instrument is certainly preferable to conducting the orchestra. In other words, specializing in something (visualization, bim, etc.) is often more profitable than doing the architect all-round. In such artisan vision we find our limit and our value.

Il mestiere, per come lo intendiamo noi, rappresenta un processo di continua accordatura tra ricerca e contingenza. Questo è molto distante dalla cristallizzazione di un’idea, riguarda piuttosto il continuo rimando tra problemi e soluzioni, salti di scala e visioni d’insieme.
Tutto ciò rappresenta senz’altro una criticità nel mondo di oggi, dove la padronanza di uno strumento è sicuramente preferibile alla direzione d’orchestra. In altri termini specializzarsi in qualcosa (visualizzazione, bim, ecc.) risulta spesso più redditizio che fare l’architetto a tuttotondo. In questa visione artigianale ritroviamo il nostro limite ed il nostro valore.

Probably each of us three has a different opinion about it. We would like to indicate the ASSONANZA project, second place in the competition for the Anton Dohrn zoological station in Naples. This is due to the typological characteristics and the architectural scale of the place, which projected us into a nineteenth-century palace and towards the Mediterranean horizon.
In our case, the first project realized is an interior: inhabit NUMEROTRENTA.
And of course we confirm that we could never forget it for at least two main reasons: pierce the invisible limit between the designed and built architecture and the direct contact with materials and workers. Obviously, you never forget it for various ups and downs either, but the realization repays the job.

Probabilmente ognuno di noi tre ha un’opinione diversa a riguardo. Ci sentiamo di indicare il progetto ASSONANZA, secondo classificato al concorso per la stazione zoologica Anton Dohrn a Napoli. Questo per le caratteristiche tipologiche e la scala architettonica del luogo, che ci proiettavano all’interno di un palazzo ottocentesco e verso l’orizzonte del Mediterraneo.
Nel nostro caso il primo progetto realizzato è un interno: abitare NUMEROTRENTA.
E naturalmente confermiamo che non si scorda mai per almeno due ragioni principali: trapassare il limite invisibile tra l’architettura disegnata e quella costruita ed il contatto diretto con materiali e maestranze. Ovviamente non si scorda neanche per varie peripezie e problemi, ma la realizzazione ripaga il lavoro.

We believe that the boldest proposal came from another architect, and this says a lot about the bipolarity of our category. A concept for a large-scale project to be developed in just over two weeks. We rejected the proposal, with regret though, and then we saw this firm winner of the competition a few months later.

Crediamo che la proposta più audace sia derivata proprio da un altro architetto, questo la dice lunga sul bipolarismo della nostra categoria. Un concept per un progetto di grande scala da sviluppare in poco più di due settimane. Rifiutata con rammarico la proposta siamo direttamente passati  ad aver visto questo studio aggiudicarsi il concorso pochi mesi dopo.

Surely there is a chasm to be bridged between university and labour market, that ranges from the self-referentiality of the first and the exploitatively to the work of the second. We think that the innovativity that you carry forward can be a good opportunity to select decent work opportunities and reward the merit.

Thank you for getting us interviewed. It’s not often to talk about your own experience. Doing it reminds us of the beginning, even if recent, and renews the focus on the direction to head.

Sicuramente c’è un voragine da colmare tra università e professione che spazia dall’ autoreferenzialità della prima e lo sfruttamente sul lavoro della seconda. Pensiamo che la novità che portate avanti possa essere una buona occasione per selezionare opportunità lavorative dignitose e premiare il meritano.
