Umarell is a word of the Bolognese dialect to indicate a persona: in the collective imagination a nice retiree who appreciates the building sites of the city so much that he observes and supervises the work in progress constantly, keeping the hands folded behind his back – a real cult by now! In contrast to the frenetic metropolitan pace, these shrewd citizens have become the synonym of tranquillity and slowness, as well as the careful and scrupulous look of the community on the progress of the construction sites around the city. Umarell è una parola del dialetto bolognese per indicare un simpatico pensionato che, nell’immaginario collettivo, apprezza al punto i cantieri della città da osservare e supervisione costantemente i lavori in corso, mantenendo la posa a mani giunte dietro la schiena – un cult ormai! In contrapposizione con i ritmi frenetici dell’ambiente metropolitano, questi accorti cittadini sono diventati il sinonimo della tranquillità e della lentezza, nonché dell’attento e scrupoloso sguardo della comunità sui progressi dei cantieri sparsi per la città. In 2017 the 3D printed UMARELL was created in this cool laboratory with the motto: “The hardest thing to do is work hard when nobody is watching you!” Increase your productivity with your personal UMARELL.

Perhaps many of you have already heard about it, since it was a trend topic that rebounded for all social media channels last winter. Be’, siete fortunati perché ci hanno già pensato gli amici di The FabLab, il centro di ricerca e sviluppo, nonché laboratorio di fabbricazione digitale condiviso, ospitato all’interno di Talent Garden a Milano!

Magari molti di voi ne hanno già sentito parlare, visto che è stato un trend topic che ha rimbalzato per tutti i canali social lo scorso inverno. Massimo Temporelli, che ha fondato TheFabLab insieme a Francesco Colorni e Bernando Gamucci, ha già raccontato la straordinaria “storia di un successo inaspettato”: dopo un post di Facebook tra amici, un articolo di un giornale online fa scattare un irrefrenabile processo di condivisioni a catena e la notizia dell’”umarell che ti guarda lavorare e aumenta la tua produttività ” diventa virale, con risvolti strabilianti anche per la produzione e la vendita degli omini da scrivania.
The scientific efficacy of the Umarell on the increase in productivity is very far from the results of the sociological experiments conducted in Hawthorne (USA) in the 70s: from that research derives the concept of “Hawthorne effect” as a set of changes in the behaviour due to the presence of observers.
As the designers know, however, these changes may not always be totally positive: having the supervisor, the boss, the professor, the client or even just our colleague next to us or, worse, behind us, watching the project we are working on, annoyingly touching on the screen maybe, does not always give pleasant sensations.
But if the observer is a nice and colourful desk little man who keeps us company, to name Pino, Gino, Antonino, who knows that our productivity, or our good mood, does not really increase.

La scientificità sull’efficacia dell’umarell sull’aumento della produttività è naturalmente ben lontana dai risultati degli esperimenti sociologici condotti a Hawthorne (USA) negli anni settanta: da quella ricerca deriva il concetto di “effetto di Hawthorne” come insieme dei cambiamenti di un comportamento a causa della presenza di osservatori.
Come sanno bene i progettisti, tuttavia, questi cambiamenti potrebbero non essere sempre totalmente positivi: avere il supervisore, il capo, il professore, il cliente o anche solo il nostro collega accanto a noi o, peggio, alle nostre spalle, a guardare il progetto su cui stiamo lavorando, ticchettando fastidiosamente lo schermo magari, non suscita sempre sensazioni piacevoli.
Ma se l’osservatore fosse un simpatico e colorato ometto da scrivania che ci tiene compagnia, da chiamare Pino, Gino, Antonino, chissà che la nostra produttività, o il nostro buonumore, non aumenti davvero..
